Washing and Caring For Real NappiesNappies should be washed before use. This will shrink the nappy to the correct size and 'fluff up' the fabric making it more absorbent.
STORING USED NAPPIES Wet and dirty nappies can be stored in a lidded bucket until ready to wash. Nappies can be stored in a dry nappy bucket or soaked. Soaking can help reduce stains and odours setting in. If you wish to soak we suggest a non-biological sanitizer such as 'Nappy Fresh' or a couple of drops of tea tree oil. Please note Fuzzi Bunz suggest that the prolonged use of tea tree oil may break down the elastic in their nappies. If soiled nappies are stored in a lidded dry bucket for a number of days the odours may set into the fabric.
WASHING NAPPIES Please read the label, some manufacturers have their own instructions which are printed here on the product page. Generally nappies can be washed at 60 or on a normal cycle. Running a pre-rinse or short-cycle with cold water can be helpful if your nappies have been stored in a dry bucket. Use your normal washing powder you would use for your baby's clothes. Using only half of your usual powder has proved more beneficial. Do not use fabric softeners, these reduce absorbency, Do not use whiteners or any other bleaching agent It is now not recommended to use clear vinegar or bicarbonate of soda with your cloth nappies. Nappy sanitizer can be added to the wash if you wish If nappies have any Velcro, folding back the tabs will make the Velcro last longer. Also the Velcro will not snag on other items in the wash. (Also do this with Velcro on wraps)
DRYING NAPPIES Nappies can be air or line dried. Alternatively most can be tumble dried, please read the label A 5 /10min whiz in the tumble drier before hanging out to dry or after can help keep terry cotton soft.
LINERS Biodegradable liners can either be flushed away if soiled, or put in the bin if wet. Some flushable liners we sell can be washed and re-used at least once if just wet.
WRAP CARE You do not need to change the wrap at each nappy change if it is not soiled. Wraps will last longer if they are rinsed by hand and hung out to dry. If preferred Wraps are machine washable, read the label for the temperature as some manufacturers vary. If in doubt wash at 40 Some wraps can be tumble dried, but this is not recommended as the quality may deteriorate and they dry very quickly Do not use fabric conditioners, whiteners or any other bleaching agent.
